Alice’s memories span across the years 1921 to 1948. From building an air raid shelter in their London back garden, to learning how to cycle through the lanes of Somerset. Alice tells, in great descriptive detail, about social and economic life during these challenging years. Raised in Bermondsey, Alice realised many adults were unable to read and write and this was to shape her future career - teaching. Alice’s school days and then teacher training in WWII had its difficulties, but determination and strength led her to succeed. As a qualified teacher, she was sent to Somerset where, as an adult evacuee, she taught and supported evacuee children. As a Londoner in the Somerset countryside, she had a lot to learn … as Alice will tell you.
