Raised in Bermondsey, Alice realised many adults were unable to read and write and this was to shape her future career - teaching. Alice’s school days and then teacher training in WWII had its difficulties, but determination and strength led her to succeed. As a qualified teacher, she was sent to Somerset where, as an adult evacuee, she taught and supported evacuee children. As a Londoner in the Somerset countryside, she had a lot to learn … as Alice will tell you.
