A variety of unique marketing and promotional services have sprung up in recent years with many favouring self-published and indie authors. New Generation Publishing is always looking for cost effective and tangible methods to help our authors, so let’s take a look at a brief selection of these and how they might benefit you.

Services such as Bookbub and Books Go Social have huge mailing lists and, for a small fee, can promote your book to their subscribers.

BookBub

BookBub is a service which helps millions of readers to discover books they'll love, while providing publishers and authors with a way to drive sales and find new fans. It works with all major ebook retailers and devices, and partners with thousands of the industry’s leading publishers and authors to promote their books. BookBub’s marketing tools allow authors to connect with millions of power readers to find new fans and sell more books. It also has an extensive blog which houses a raft of marketing ideas and publishing insights.

BooksGoSocial (BGS)

BooksGoSocial (BGS) is an international author support service created to introduce readers to new books.

As well as helping authors, BGS hosts a thriving interactive community of authors and readers. It publishes an online magazine featuring member books and reader reviews. BGS also runs the highly regarded annual Dublin Writer’s Conference and offers professional web-based courses on marketing, digital media, self-promotion, and other programs to support its authors. It also runs The International Review of Books, a service which provides editorial reviews for authors.

BGS’s personalised service is aimed at empowering authors. 90% of the 7,000+ authors it has helped are from the US where its promotions mainly take place, and it provides a range of online promotions to ensure the books reach new readers.

It also, uniquely, offers a full 60-day money back guarantee on all its membership services. This allows authors to test their books in the market. Its authors sell their books to readers in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland.

Pay-per-click advertising

Consider pay-per-click advertising on Google, Amazon and other social media sites. While this comes at a cost, it does allow you to target a specific audience. If you have an ebook available exclusively with Amazon, you can also utilise their two promotional options: a Free Book Promotion, and a Kindle Countdown Deal.

Online reviews

For a small fee, websites such as NetGalley and Goodreads can generate a large number of genuine reviews for your book. This is vital if you want to increase the sales ranking and visibility of your book.

NetGalley

Publishers in the United States, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, France, and Japan use NetGalley to find early influencers for their books. Digital review copies allow publishers of all sizes to connect with a wider audience than would be possible with print galleys alone.

In addition to providing a platform for publishers to access a vibrant community of readers and influencers, NetGalley also provides actionable data about how early reading ignites interest and promotes sales.

It offers a package for independent authors, and works with marketing and PR firms, as well as other groups who manage book promotions. NetGalley clients can also participate in successful marketing programs to help boost engagement with its community.

Goodreads

Goodreads is the world’s largest site for readers and book recommendations. Its mission is to help people find and share books they love. Goodreads launched in January 2007.

Any author, anywhere in the world, can join the Goodreads Author Program for free. All that’s needed is an internet connection and a published book (or a soon-to-be published book) that can be found in its database. The Goodreads Author Program allows published authors to claim their profile page to promote their book and engage with readers. Once verified, author profiles will include the official Goodreads Author badge, which authors can use to tell their fans to follow them on Goodreads.

These are just a few of the service which are out there, and new players emerging all the time. So, if you are thinking about using marketing, promotional and/or review services please do your research and find the one, or one’s, which best support your needs and expectations.

NGP has connections with all of these platforms and would be happy to put a deal together for you with them.
