Choosing Best Metadata for Your Book

Free Guide to Publishing

+

Get your free guide to publishing with expert industry advice, tips and hints.

This form collects your name, email, organisation and location so that we can contact you regarding your enquiry. Check our privacy policy for full information on how we protect and manage your submitted data.

While we are going through production, please request a metadata sheet. This will help us collate important data (such as reviews/quotes, an author biography etc) that affects the visibility/accessibility of your book and can help increase sales!

I will also include an example of a completed metadata sheet, so you can see what information we need. Don’t worry about providing all of this information right away; we won’t need it until it’s time to upload the files to the printers (i.e. once you have approved the text and cover file).

This is the information we require:

1. About the book

  • Short Description
  • 350 characters, including spaces.
  • Full Description (the blurb on your back cover)
  • Min 200 characters, max 4000 characters, including spaces.
  • Detailed descriptive copy appropriate for public display, used for marketing, discovery and sales purposes. It drives search engine optimization, and it is your best chance to pitch the book and get people interested. Describe the book in straightforward and consumer-friendly terms.

2. About the author

  • Biography
  • 4000 characters maximum, including spaces.
  • Prior Work
  • 4000 characters maximum, including spaces.
  • New Generation Publishing
  • Keywords (Enter up to seven keyword phrases, separated by semicolons). These
  • are additional topics, categories, and consumer search terms related to the book. Keywords are used by certain online retailers to better understand and categorize your book. They should be complementary to, and not duplicative of, your chosen genre(s). For example, if you have written a book about spies during The Cold War, your keywords would be: espionage books; spy books; cold war books; Russian spy books; American spy books.

These should be terms and phrases that potential buyers may search for, including things such as:

  • Themes (e.g. Mediterranean diet; coming of age) Setting, or time period (e.g. Victorian era; American Southwest; War of 1812)
  • Story tone, writing style or genre (e.g. psychological thriller; verse novel; heart- warming romance)
  • Character types and roles (e.g. female protagonist;
  • immigrant kids; working mom; Jewish family)
  • Format or audience notes (e.g. baby board books; coloring books; motivational books for women)

3. Categorise your book

BIC code (This will be the same/similar to the BISAC/genre code you picked when preparing material for the cover. On this website, you can search for terms related to your book and then just send me the code for your chosen category (for example: FHD – Espionage and spy thriller): https://ns.editeur.org/bic_categories/344

4. Regional Subject

Information on the primary geographic location of the book. Select the most accurate relevant region. It is better to select a broader, more inclusive region if the book covers multiple locales. For example, for a book about a backpacking trip through Central America, select Central America rather than one particular country or city. However, if the content is very focused on just one city, state/province, or other sub‐region, then select that.

5. Thema Subject

Similar to BISAC and BIC, Thema is a classification scheme to identify the major categories for a work, including genre(s), topic(s), and theme(s). Thema is used internationally by global distributors, aggregators and retailers. We recommend clicking on the link below and using the search bar to search for key terms related to your book (for example, “Fantasy” or “Dystopia”); this will then bring up every Thema Subject connected to those terms: https://ns.editeur.org/thema/en/.

6. Review Quotes

  • 4000 characters maximum, including spaces.
  • Any praise for the title and/or contributor(s). Include two to eight positive review quotes. These should be from a variety of sources and should highlight different aspects of the book. Ideally, reviews will come from people and publications known by and influential with potential buyers. Each quote should be brief (no more than 50 words each). Provide excerpts from longer reviews. List the most powerful or effective review quote first.
