When Jimmy Rawlings began his holiday, he was most determined that his identity, as the senior detective in a Southern England police force, should remain hidden from his fellow travellers. He was using his overdue leave by taking a coach and cruise ship tour of South Island, New Zealand. He did not need the rest of the group he would join, to see him as the man to resolve their petty mishaps and problems.
For a time, all goes well. Jimmy feels the recent stresses of his work begin to take a back seat, his marital and parental difficulties to disappear from the forefront of his mind. He makes new friends (and even finds an unexpected hint of romance) as he looses himself in the largely unspoilt beauty and sheer drama of the New Zealand landscapes.
However, as the tour progresses, tensions start to grow within the group, tensions which come to a head on the cruise ship, one stormy night in Fiordland, amidst the overwhelming beauty of Milford Sound.
A dramatic violent incident on board the luxury cruise ship, forces Jimmy to reveal his working identity, as he reluctantly becomes involved in a major crime, where any one of the ship’s crew, or its passengers, could be the perpetrator.
