Martin Kyrle first went canvassing for the Liberals in the general election of 1959. Over the years he's met a wide assortment of odd-balls, nut cases and welcoming residents and has put together of wide selection of his best memories. Also included are what he got up to when he was Mayor of Eastleigh or his wife was (twice), and how he lost a bet and ended up cutting a grass verge with a scythe, was hospitalised after being attacked by two German Shepherd dogs (at the same time) and on a coach in France survived when the driver drove through the barriers at a level crossing. He cornered the witch vote in the New Forest, met the Duke of Edinburgh and enjoyed a joke, witnessed an investiture and got soaked delivering leaflets in the middle of Storm Doris in 2017. One of his most embarrassing experiences was in his local Methodist church when as Mayor he delivered a speech of welcome to a visiting trio of musicians from Russia and when he repeated it in Russian the audience broke into spontaneous applause. Anyone in any party who's been involved in practical politics will recognise some of these incidents, which overall show how politics has chopped and changed over time.
