Honor Duff’s new collection Singing in the Dark is an elegant celebration of a life joyously spent. The poems have clearly been assembled with meticulous attention, each delivering its own significance to the story, as Duff seamlessly pieces the elements together, moving from childhood memories, through love and loss, music and art, her own extensive travels and the significance of the natural world, all enlightened by her sparkling curiosity and unshakeable humanity. Without doubt a collection to savour and enjoy.

Benedictions abound in these poems – whether via a glance inside a bus window, or the colour of a dress once worn in a black and white photograph. Here both past and present meet in the alchemy of the poet’s mirror. The land – its myths, its spirit – spins in the same gyre of time passing. Honor Duff is a poet at the height of her powers. How brilliant here the journey that blesses each turn.

Singing in the Dark by Honor Duff enters, cherishes and narrates, in companionable poetic voice, memory, nature, loss of loved ones, sisterhood, travel, the literary and more. It is a warm-hearted, hopeful, and loving eclectic collection of poems. It is easy to sense the heartfelt kindness toward the human and non-human other, where the latter includes animals, plants, the rain, the moon, the sky and stars. There is singing indeed.
