When Dan Wallace, a retired heart surgeon, has a stroke, he finds himself bundled into a care home by his wife. After a few months he sinks into a suicidal depression until Janine, an exuberant woman of Afro-Caribbean descent, turns up as a fellow resident. Dan has never befriended anyone of colour or a working-class background before, but the relationship flourishes, partly due to their mutual love of football. When Dan finds out his wife is having an affair, he divorced her and asks Janine if she wants to move to a luxury care home by the sea. She agrees, but then discovers a devastating secret from his past, and added to that, a crime he's committed in an attempt at reparation.
