In the 1930s, Europe was heading for a major armed conflict, and while many countries realised this fact, preparations for war did not go everywhere as planned. Almost every European country embarked upon its own indigenous aircraft design and production in an attempt to upgrade their air forces. And as the war broke out, many civil aircraft found their way into military service as well. This is a story of not only those aircraft that participated in WW2 but also many that did not make it to the combat units or, if they did, did not get a chance to participate for various reasons. This is a story of outdated aircraft that got involved in combat, as well as of innovative designs that emerged alongside those classic open-cockpit biplanes. This is also a story of aircraft that very quickly got forgotten and those that became legendary.
